軽いタッチの女性バディものコージー・ミステリー。 とても楽しんで読めました。 仕事で疲れた時の気晴らしにピッタリ。
粗筋を少々。 第二次世界大戦後まもないロンドンで、二人の女性、アイリス・スパークスとグエン・ベインブリッジが結婚相談所を開きます。 アイリスはケンブリッジ卒で数カ国語を操る才媛でチャキチャキでいなせな元MI6の諜報部員、グエンはホームズ顔負けの観察眼を持つ善良でおっとりとしたイギリス上流貴族の若き未亡人。 その二人の相談所に顧客として訪れた若き女性ティリーが殺人事件に巻き込まれます。 彼女とお見合いデートの約束をしていた別のクライアントの男性が犯人の嫌疑をかけられるのですが、誠実そうな彼が殺人者であるとはとても思えない二人。 そこでこの男性の無実を晴らすべく、彼女たちは身の危険に晒されながらも奮闘するというストーリー。 このプロットを少し読んだだけでも、面白そう、手応えあり、と感じました。
テンポの良い会話が特に良し。 辞書にも載っていない当時のロンドンの口語表現には少し読み辛くもありましたが、彼女たちがケンカをしながらもお互い信頼し合い、事件解決に乗り出す名コンビぶりが微笑ましく、またそれぞれの持つ陰のある過去や純愛要素も散りばまれて、このストーリーに更に深みを与えています。
著者はこれがデビュー作だという事ですが、そのグイグイ引き込んでいくストーリーテラーとしての力量は大したもんです。

Since he was there for a lengthy stay, he is probably someone either diplomatic or military.” “Heavens,” exclaimed Iris in chagrin. “You’ve figured all that out from my perfume?”
“I love Vol de Nuit,” sighed Gwen. “Ask him to pick me up a bottle next time. He’s married, isn’t he?”
Iris didn’t answer.
“He is,” said Gwen sadly. “If he wasn’t, you’d be dropping hints about him right and left, even if you were lovers without benefit of clergy. Another area of your life that you keep secret. It’s a wonder that you don’t burst.”
⚫︎ 敵のアジトに乗り込むアイリスとグエン。 このシーン、カッコいい。 峰不二子かと思ったよ。
They stopped to look at the display windows at Tolbert’s.
“Closed,” commented Gwen.
“Which is why we commit burglaries on Sundays,” said Iris.
She reached into her bag and pulled out a small, black leather case. She walked over to the door to the print shop, held up the padlock, and examined it critically.
“A Prentice,” she said. “Give me a minute.” She unzipped the case and pulled out a pair of small, thin metal blades.
“What the hell are you doing?” asked Pilcher from behind them.
“You were supposed to stay over there,” said Gwen sternly.
“But she’s trying to pick the lock! How does she even know how to do that?”
“She can’t tell you,” said Gwen. “Gosh, that’s satisfying to say.”
There was a metallic clack from behind her. She turned to see Iris removing the padlock and opening the door.
“Nicely done,” said Gwen.
“Prentices are easy,” said Iris. “Shall we?” They slipped inside. Pilcher stood there for a moment. Then Iris poked her head out.
“Are you coming or not?” she asked.
ラストには教科書チックな「読後にみんなで考えましょう(Discussion Questions)」的な設問が付いています。 ユーモアがあって面白い。
第二次世界大戦後のロンドン界隈の雰囲気をもっと味わいたいなら、Connie Willis “Black Out/All Clear” (238, 239冊目に感想あり)はいかがでしょう。
ちなみに、映画の女性バディものなら、雰囲気は違うけど「テルマ&ルイーズ」がオススメです。
